  • Use free budgeting apps like Rocke Money to track your expenses.
  • Set spending limits on non-essentials like that concert ticket you might not end up attending and can’t resell.
  • Use student-friendly banks with no fees.

  • House-hack: Rent out a room or share living space with roommates.
  • Consider university housing or subsidized student apartments.
  • Use energy-efficient practices to lower electricity bills.
  • Live within your means.

3. Save on Food

  • Cook at home instead of eating out. Meal prep always helps!
  • If you have to order food, find apps with discounted plans for a month or quaterly. Have you heard of Too Good To Go to get discounted surplus food.
  • Buy in bulk from wholesale stores (Costco, Sam’s Club) with friends (or housemates😉).
  • Take advantage of free campus events with food. There are lots of those at the begining of the semester!

4. Affordable Transportation

  • Use student discounts on public transport.
  • Buy a used bike or e-scooter instead of driving.
  • Carpool or use ride-sharing services when needed.
  • If you must have a car, consider fuel-efficient or hybrid models.
  • Hope you are saving on your car insurance and car payments. A topic for another day.

5. Textbooks & Study Materials

  • Sell notes or tutor online.
  • Start a small business or invest in high-yield savings accounts & ETFs.
  • Join paid surveys, mystery shopping, or research studies.

7. Cut Down on Subscriptions

  • If allowed, continue to share your subscriptions with friends or family.

8. Healthcare & Wellness

  • Use university health services for free or discounted healthcare.
  • Check for student insurance plans with better coverage.
  • Take advantage of free or low-cost gym access on campus.

9. Avoid Unnecessary Debt

  • Apply for grants, scholarships, and bursaries instead of loans.
  • Use cash-back credit cards responsibly and make sure you stick with paying the balance in full monthly.
