Another weekend has rolled in, and we are here for it. Weekends present an opportunity to either spend money or save more. I’m all about low-cost (or no-cost!) ways to enjoy your days off, recharge, and maybe even discover a new hobby or two. Needless to say, you can save your money and still have fun for the weekend. Here are money-saving activities that are great for weekends:

1. Visit your local library

Yes! I am definitely into visiting a library. Libraries are so underrated but when you finally realise what you are missing out, you will always want to go back. Think about access to all the free books, movies, audiobooks, and sometimes even free classes or workshops. Yes, please. Libraries are a valuable resource for a wide range of literature, genres, and authors. Instead of ordering that book from Amazon, you might borrow it from a public library and return it later. That is some bucks saved effortlessly. No one talks enough about the cozy vibes you get from libraries, being surrounded by books. Spend a couple of hours there, and I promise you’ll leave feeling inspired and refreshed.

2. Meal prepping

This point is for kitchen lovers and fans of Gordon Ramsay. The weekend is perfect for slow cooking or trying that recipe you saved two months ago. Even better is if following 10 Money-saving tips for students in 2025, you want to save on food by cooking instead of eating out. Use what you already have in the fridge or plan a budget-friendly grocery list on a calm saturday morning and get to work. You may even use the opportunity to invite your friend over and turn it into a cook-and-chat hangout.

3. Go thrifting

If you need to get out for some good exercise and a goal to hit those 10K steps, why not go thrifting? Head to a local thrift shop or flea market with a small budget or no intention of buying, and just explore. You may even find some seasonal items to buy at a lower price. Thrifting can be therapeutic and relaxing and if you are a history lover, you might even stumble on a historic item.

4. Multitask while bingeing on shows

Who says laundry has to be boring or hard?! For those chores you consider time-consuming and boring, you can spice things up by bingeing on shows or listening to free podcasts on YouTube. Doing your laundry saves you some money instead of giving it to the dry cleaner. Since time is money, multitasking saves you some time and gives you enough room to do other things like catching up on your schoolwork.

5. Public parks have enough space for everyone

If you haven’t thought of it, some public parks are free. You can enjoy your weekend in the great outdoors, soaking in some fresh air without extra expenses. If you have some friends or partners, you can even prepare a picnic basket to carry with you. Other physical activities for workouts, like hiking, running, and playgrounds, are available. There you go, an affordable weekend in the bag.

6. Go for the game nights

Game nights are students’ classic. Nothing beats a good game with great friends during the weekends. You can unwind from the stress of the week and even put on your competitive hat. Whether it’s a deck of cards, a board game, or a phone-based trivia app, game night is a classic. Invite a few friends over, pop some popcorn, and let the games (and laughter) begin.

7. Don’t go out

Its 2025, a good way to save your money is to stay indoors simply. No, ordering from Amazon does not help, so avoid that. When you choose to stay indoors, you shield yourself from impulse spending, emergencies, mindless spending, and even parking tickets. You can make your own coffee at the comfort of your home and cozy up in your PJ all day. Also, who needs a theater when you’ve got blankets, popcorn, and a screen of any kind? Queue up some comfort, feel-good films, or that series you’ve been meaning to start. Streaming platforms like Hulu, and even YouTube have free options galore.

See, weekends don’t have to mean spending money. In fact, some of the most memorable moments come from simple, intentional time spent doing what you love or discovering something new. So go easy on your wallet and treat yourself to a weekend filled with good vibes instead. You can check out Budgeting ideas for the new school year to get more ideas. Which one will you try out?
